The doctors at GRC IME write medical legal reports for individuals who have either been in a motor vehicle accident or been involved in a personal injury claim. The reports he writes are used in the court or in the individual’s personal claim. It is used as clinical evidence for these trials. The IME has multiple steps to its final product that are required to produce the final report. Many of the steps are important and require being able to support the doctors through the process.

A referral for an IME is required by a lawyer or an insurance company for a claim. Usually it is for a motor vehicle accident claim but does not have to be. The assessment is outside of a regular physician-patient relationship as an IME does not provide treatment or followup, it is a completely independent assessment only.

The reports provide three things: 1. Impairment rating. This is recognized by lawyers and insurance companies as a dollar amount. Each injured body part would provide an impairment rating. The full body is 100% 2. Function. How the patient was functioning before and after the accident. 3. Treatment recommendations. The doctors are specialists and not treating physicians. The patient can use the report (once they receive it from their lawyer) as a prescription and provide it to their family doctor and clinicians (physiotherapists, massage therapists) who will administer the treatment. We do not release the report to anyone other than the lawyer or insurance company. All records are confidential.

The only thing a patient needs to bring is a valid government issued ID such as a driver's license and a current list of medications.

The assessment takes up to 1 hour and 15 minutes approximately depending on the complexity of the case.

After the assessment, the lawyer can expect to receive the report with our invoice within 3-6 weeks. The report is used to help settle the claim and provide approval for more treatment.

We schedule virtual IME's through our app SEABIRD. It is a user friendly and secure app that can be downloaded from the Apple Store and Google Play[1] . If you are using a computer for the assessment, you do not need to download the app. The lawyer needs to refer a patient for a virtual IME the same way as a regular IME (by email to clinic@grchealth.ca) or by phone (587) 520-6740. This depends on the type of Specialist required. For example, Orthopaedic IME's are usually done at the beginning of the claim, while Rehab Specialist IME's are usually done at the end of the claim. We provide assessments throughout the timeline.
